Grand Valley State split a GLIAC home doubleheader with Northwood on Saturday. The Timberwolves won game one 2-1 in eight innings, while the Lakers won game two, 2-0, in eight innings of action. GVSU is now 7-13 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC, while Northwood is 10-4 and 1-1.
GVSU scored first in game one, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as sophomore first baseman Crista Buresh started off the inning with a home run to left center field. Northwood came back to tie the game by posting a run in the top of the sixth. The Timberwolves added the game-winning run in the top of the eighth as they tallied two hits.
Junior Kristin Jenner started the game on the mound for the Lakers, pitching six innings and allowed three hits, one run, and three walks, while striking out one. Allison Crews recorded the loss as she threw the final two innings of play and gave up two hits and a run.
Junior designated player Stacie DelChiaro recorded two of the three Lakers hits, while Buresh recorded the other.
Game two also went into the eighth inning with the score tied at 0-0. Grand Valley tallied two runs in the top of the eighth and despite two Laker errors in the bottom of the eight, they didn't allow the Timberwolves to score.
Freshman pinch hitter Brittany Hay reached first base on an error by the shortstop to start the eighth inning. Junior left fielder Shelby Brayton reached base on a fielder's choice and Hay advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Hay got out on a fielder's choice, which put junior center fielder Tara Marsh on first base. Brayton advanced to third base on a sacrifice fly to center field by senior shortstop Sarah Paape and scored on a single by Buresh. Marsh scored the second Laker run on a wild pitch to give GVSU a 2-0 victory.
Crews (2-6) picked up the win, throwing all eight innings, while allowing five hits and recording three strikeouts.
Grand Valley talied just three hits in the game as Paape, Buresh, and junior third baseman Denise Ireton all recorded hits.
