Grand Valley State dropped a non-league tilt Tuesday afternoon to St. Joseph's College by a 13-8 score. GVSU drops to 20-10 on the year and will next be in action Wednesday at Northwood for a GLIAC doubleheader.
The Pumas struck first with four runs on three hits in the top of the third. However, the Lakers were able to get one run back in the bottom half of the inning when SS Ryan Lyster turned a walk into a run on singles by 1B Scott Allen and CF Brandon McFarland. St. Joseph's added another run in the fifth on a solo HR, but GVSU loaded the bases with LF Pat Radde's walk and back-to-back singles by Lyster and 2B Scott Smith. Radde scored on wild pitch and McFarland drove home two runs with a single to center. GVSU tied the game in the fifth (5-5) as DH Chad Rohacs reached on an error by the Puma SS. 3B Lee VanStreain walked and then both advanced a base on a throwing error by the catcher. Rohacs scored on a sac fly by Pat Radde. St. Joe's put up four in the top of the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 12-5 lead. GVSU pushed across three runs in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run HR by Rohacs and RF Clay Ackerman singled and later scored.
Nathan McCrory took the loss (0-2) for the Lakers on the hill. McFarland was the only Lakers with multiple hits.
