Grand Valley State dropped a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College on Saturday, falling 2-1 in game one and 4-0 in game two. GVSU drops to 5-9 overall. The Lakers will play a non-conference doubleheader at Bellarmine College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Saint Joseph's College took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Grand Valley came back to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Junior designated player Stacie DelChiaro doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third base on a ground out by junior center fielder Tara Marsh. The run scored on a wild pitch.
The Pumas scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Kristin Jenner (4-1) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. She walked five and recorded four strikeouts. Freshman Stephanie Cole threw the final two-third of an inning, giving up a hit and a walk.
The Lakers outhit the Pumas, 7-4, but left 11 runners stranded on base. Senior shortstop Sarah Paape and sophomore first baseman Crista Buresh each recorded two hits for GVSU. Freshman right fielder Sarah Holland, junior third baseman Denise Ireton, and DelChiaro each tallied a hit apiece.
In game two, the Lakers trailed 2-0 after three runs and weren't able to overcome the deficit. The Pumas added a run in both the fourth and sixth innings to seal the 4-0 win.
Sophomore Allison Crews (0-4) recorded the loss, throwing all six innings. Crews allowed 11 hits, four earned runs, a walk, and struck out eight.
Grand Valley recorded just two hits in the game, one by Ireton and the other coming from freshman designated hitter Elizabeth Smith.
