Lakers Defeat Michigan Tech, 66-48, in GLIAC Tourney Quarterfinal

Grand Valley State defeated Michigan Tech, 66-48, in the Quarterfinal round of the GLIAC Tournament Tuesday night. The Lakers will host the Semifinals and Championship Game. GVSU will play Northern Michigan on Friday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. and Gannon will play Ashland at 8:00 p.m. The GLIAC Tournament Championship game will be held on Saturday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m.

The game was tied at 13-13 with 10:12 left in the first half, but then GVSU went on a 11-0 run to take a 24-13 lead at the 2:38 mark. The Huskies made three free throws to cut the Laker lead to 27-18 at the half.

Grand Valley increased its lead to 21 points (44-23) on a three-pointer by junior forward Niki Reams at the 12:06 mark. Freshman Crystal Zick made back-to-back layups, giving the Lakers a 57-31 lead with 5:20 remaining.

GVSU shot an outstanding 57.7% (15-of-26) from the field in the second half and 51.1% (24-of-47) on the game. The Lakers recorded nine steals and forced 18 turnovers. Grand Valley scored 26 points in the paint and 12 points of the Huskies' turnovers.

Reams led all scorers with 25 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Niki has scored in double figures in 24 out of 28 games this season. Sophomore forward Julia Braseth recorded 14 points, while Zick added 13 points, five assists, and two rebounds. Senior guard Janine Guastella tallied six points, five rebounds, and four assists and sophomore guard Erika Ryskamp chipped in four points, four rebounds, and three steals.

The Lakers made it to the semifinals of the GLIAC Tournament in 2002-03, where they defeated Hillsdale College, 64-58.
