Grand Valley State extended its consecutive game winning streak to 12 as the Lakers defeated GLIAC North Division foe Michigan Tech, 63-44 at home on Saturday. GVSU improves to 17-4 overall and 11-1 in conference play, while the Huskies fall to 17-5 overall and 11-2 in the GLIAC. GVSU will travel to West Michigan rival Ferris State on Monday, Feb. 7 at 6:00 p.m.
The Lakers opened the game with a 13-6 lead at the 11:14 mark, but the Huskies went on a 10-0 run to lead 16-13 with 5:29 remaining. The game was tied at 18-18 with 4:20 left in the first half. GVSU scored the final six points of the game to take a 24-18 halftime lead.
GVSU came out hot in the second half, scoring the first nine point to take a 33-18 lead at the 17:42 mark. Grand Valley increased the lead to 23 points with 7:12 remaining in the game.
Grand Valley outrebounded Michigan Tech by a 37-29 margin. The Lakers shot 48.9% from the floor, including 55.6% in the second half. GVSU held MTU to just 33.9% shooting on the game.
Junior forward Niki Reams contributed 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three blocks, while sophomore guard Erika Ryskamp added 12 points and three rebounds. Sophomore forward Julia Braseth posted 10 points and five rebounds and freshman guard Crystal Zick recorded six points and four assists.
