GVSU Defeats Northern Michigan 73-49 Thursday Night

Grand Valley State picked up its 11th consecutive win, defeating Northern Michigan, 73-49, at the GVSU Fieldhouse Thursday night. The Lakers improve to 16-4 overall and 10-1 in GLIAC play, while the Wildcats drop to 10-9 and 3-8. GVSU will host GLIAC North Division foe Michigan Tech on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1:00 p.m.

Northern Michigan took a 21-10 lead with 9:01 left in the first half, but GVSU came charging back to close out the first half on a 23-9 run. The Lakers led 33-30 at the half as junior forward Niki Reams posted 10 points and seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes of action.

Grand Valley came out in the second half to take a 11 point lead with 12:34 left in the game. GVSU pushed the lead to 19 with 4:08 remaining after forcing 13 second half turnovers. Grand Valley State scored 30 points off Northern Michigan turnovers. The Lakers outrebounded the Wildcats, 41-29, including 17-6 on the offensive glass.

Sophomore guard Erika Ryskamp led the Lakers with 22 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Reams recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while adding three assists and two steals. Freshman guard Crystal Zick tallied 12 points, six steals, and three rebounds and freshman center Rachael Willett added 11 points and four rebounds.
