GVSU Knocks Off #5 Lake Superior State, 80-64

Grand Valley State is now tied for first place in the GLLAC North Division after defeating #5 Lake Superior State, 80-64, Saturday afternoon. The GVSU Fieldhouse Arena was packed with a crowd of 2083 for the contest between the #1 and #2 ranked team in the Great Lakes Region. GVSU has won 15 straight games and improves to 20-4 overall and 14-1 in the GLIAC, while LSSU drops to 18-4 overall and 13-1 in GLIAC action.

GVSU built a 28-22 lead with 10:28 remaining, but Lake Superior State went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to three (22-19) at the 7:33 mark. Junior forward Niki Reams made a pair of layups and sophomore forward Julia Braseth scored in the paint to give the Lakers a 31-22 lead with 3:53 left in the first half. GVSU lead 37-27 at the half.

Lake Superior State cut GVSU's lead to four points (46-42) with 12:25 left in the second half, but Grand Valley went on an 18-5 run to take a 17-point (64-47) lead with 6:04 remaining.

Grand Valley outrebounded Lake Superior by a 36-24 margin, including 16-5 on the offensive glass.

Reams recorded her 10th double-double of the season, posting 29 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Sophomore guard Erika Ryskamp tallied 19 points, three rebounds, and three steals, while Braseth added 12 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Crystal Zick chipped in 10 points and four assists.

Grand Valley State will host Northwood on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6:00 p.m. in its regular season home finale.
