The #9-ranked GVSU Laker Women's Basketball team claimed a 75-55 victory against Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich. Senior forward Niki Reams led the Lakers with a season-high 33 points and pulled down nine rebounds on the night. The Lakers improve to 7-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the GLIAC. Grand Valley will host Mercyhurst at 12 pm on Saturday, Dec. 10.
The Lakers and Bulldogs battled back and forth throughout the first 11:30 of the opening half. There were 12 lead changes and five ties during the stretch. Grand Valley went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes that was capped off by one of Niki Reams' three three-pointers on the night. Ferris State cut the Laker lead to eight with a pair of free throws just before the half.
Grand Valley lengthened its lead to 16 midway through the second half using an 8-0 run that was finished off by a Crystal Zick fastbreak layup following a Reams steal. Zick finished the night with a career-high 17 points, shooting 66.7 percent from the field (8-12).
In addition to her 33 points, Reams fell one board short of a second consecutive double-double. Junior guard Erin Cyplik added 10 points and pulled down six rebounds. Cyplik leads the Lakers in rebounding averaging 6.7 caroms per game.
