Grand Valley State fell to 2-1 in GLIAC action and 5-2 overall after a 79-63 loss to Ferris State before a Wink Arena record crowd of 1,710. Sophomore guard Jason Jamerson led all scorers with 16 points. The Lakers will host Mercyhurst Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 pm in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
The Lakers and Bulldogs went into halftime even at 34 despite GVSU being down by as many as nine points early in the contest. GVSU used an 8-0 run to tie the game at 24 with 4:56 remaining after a Courtney James three-pointer. There were four ties and six lead changes in the final five minutes of the opening frame.
GVSU led by four early the second half but were unable to stop a big Bulldog run. Ferris State outscored the Lakers 26-8 over the last 9:51 of the game en route to the 16 point victory. Grand Valley lost their third consecutive game in Wink Arena after winning back-to-back contests in 2001-02 and 2002-03.
Three Lakers scored in double-digits with Jamerson leading the way with 16. Callistus Eziukwu tallied 15 on 7-of-9 shooting (77.8). Senior point guard Courtney James added 15 on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc and dished out four assists.
GVSU was forced into 25 turnovers which resulted in 24 Ferris State points and were outrebounded by a 36-24 margin. The Lakers shot 50.0 percent or better from the field for the fifth time this season and held the Bulldogs to 45.9 percent (28-61). The Lakers have yet to allow an opponent to shoot better than 50.0 percent this season and have held 32 of their last 35 opponents under the mark.
