Grand Valley State swept Ferris State, 3-0 (30-19, 30-19, 30-21) in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament Wednesday night. The Lakers improve to 24-6 on the season and advance to the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 12 against Hillsdale at 7:30 p.m. in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. Northwood and Ashland will battle in the other semifinal match at 5:00 p.m.
The Lakers came out strong as they hit .395 as a team in game one to seal the 30-19 win. GVSU continued to play tough, picking up wins in games two and three, 30-19 and 30-21 respectively.
Grand Valley tallied a .336 team hitting percentage, while Ferris State hit just .073 in the match. The Lakers tallied seven service aces, six blocks, and 20 more kills than the Bulldogs.
Senior middle blocker Tracy Kirk recorded a .560 attack percentage as she posted 14 kills, two aces, and two assists. Junior outside hitter Megan Helsen also added 14 kills, nine digs, two assisted blocks, while hitting .367.
Junior middle blocker Meghan Moore tallied 12 kills and five assisted blocks, while sophomore libero Alyson Riley had a team-high 21 digs. Sophomore Cortney Lokker and senior outside hitter Tina Tromblay each added 10 digs apiece. Redshirt freshman Jamie Ashmore led both teams with 31 assists and added eight digs.
This was the third meeting between to the two West Michigan rivals this season. The home team had won each of the previous meetings. GVSU won 3-2 in Allendale on Oct. 11, while the Bulldogs won 3-0 in Big Rapids on Nov. 4.
