#11 GVSU Posts 5-1 Victory To Claim GLIAC Championship

Allendale, Mich. - The Lakers scored early and often en route to a GLIAC Championship clinching 5-1 victory over West Michigan rival Ferris State. Freshman Katy Tafler notched two goals to break the Laker single-season record with 24 goals on the year. GVSU finishes the regular season with a 17-2 overall and 7-1 GLIAC record. The Lakers have qualified for the Great Lakes Regional which will begin Friday, Nov. 11 at a time and place to be determined.

The win ensured the Lakers at least a share of the GLIAC Championship, depending upon the outcome of the Ashland-Findlay match. The title marks the first conference championship in Laker soccer history.

Grand Valley put the game away early as they scored three goals in the first eight minutes. Senior Mirela Tutundzic opened up the scoring with a goal just four minutes into the match on a pass from Shannon Carrier. Tafler scored her first goal less than two minutes later to up the Laker lead to two. Senior Jenny Swalec made the score 3-0 when she beat the Bulldog keeper at the seven minute mark. Freshman Megan McCarthy notched her sixth goal of the season as the Lakers took a 4-0 lead into the break.

Ferris State got on the board with a goal by Heather O'Keefe seven minutes into the second half, but the Lakers responded by keeping the Bulldogs out of the net for the rest of the contest. Tafler added her second goal of the game with 10 minutes left to give the Lakers a 5-1 victory.

The Lakers will be in action on Friday, Nov. 11 against an opponent to be determined.
