Grand Valley State dropped a 66-63 decision to Lewis University on Saturday in the final game of the Days Inn Classic. The Lakers fall to 3-2 overall and will play at Aquinas College on Monday, Nov. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
The two teams battled back and forth with neither team leading by more than three until the Lakers took a 14-9 lead on a Crystal Zick layup with 14:52 left in the first half. Lewis went up by one with 13 minutes remaining, but GVSU took a four point lead with 10:59 left. The two teams went three minutes without making a shot before the Flyers tied the game at 22-22 with 7:08 left. The lead changed five more times in the final seven minutes before GVSU took a one point halftime lead on a jumper by Courtney Hammond with 29 second left in the first half. There were 12 lead changes and the score was tied five times in the first half.
Grand Valley took a five point lead at the 17:22 mark on a Zick layup, but Lewis went on a 10-2 run to take a three-point (48-45) lead. Lewis went up by seven late in the second half and never looked back.
Senior forward Niki Reams led the Lakers with 14 points and five rebounds. Junior forward Julia Braseth tallied 13 points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard Crystal Zick added 11 points and eight assists.
