GVSU Defeats Calvin College, 81-48 in Season Opener

Grand Valley State's women's basketball team recorded an 81-48 win over Calvin College in its season opener Tuesday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers will travel to Springfield, Mo. for the Drury Tip-off Classic this weekend. GVSU will play Drury on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 3:00 p.m. and Southern Arkansas on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1:00 p.m.

The game started off close before Calvin went on a 9-4 run to take a seven point lead (19-12). Grand Valley went on a 23-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 16-point lead. GVSU ended the first half on a jumper by Julia Braseth to take a 39-22 lead into the locker room.

Grand Valley came out strong in the second half and took a 22-point lead with 8:34 left in the game. The Lakers closed out the game on an 8-2 run as freshman Jenny Steffen and Nicole Carr each recorded two jumper apiece.

GVSU recorded 52 points in the paint and 39 points off of Calvin's 29 turnovers. Grand Valley also recorded 26 second chance points. The Lakers bench chipped in 35 points.

Leading all scorers was sophomore guard Crystal Zick who tallied 16 points, five assists, and two steals. Junior forward Julia Braseth recorded 11 points and four rebounds, while freshman Jenny Steffen added 10 points and two rebounds. Sophomore guard Erin Cyplik tallied eight points, eight rebounds, and three assists and junior Taushauna Churchwell chipped in eight points, two rebounds, five assists, and five steals for the Lakers.
