#17 Grand Valley State defeated Saginaw Valley State, 3-0 (30-28, 30-19, 30-20) Saturday afternoon in their last regular season home match. The Lakers improve to 21-4 overall and 13-1 in the GLIAC.
Saginaw Valley State battled Grand Valley close in the first game, leading throughout most of the game. GVSU battled back to take their first lead of the game, 25-24 and never looked back. The Lakers won game one, 30-28 and sealed the match with wins in games two and three, 30-19, 30-20 respectively.
The Lakers hit .322 as a team, while the Cardinals hit just .099. Grand Valley tallied 10 total team blocks, while adding six service aces.
Senior middle blocker Tracy Kirk led all hitters with 17 kills, two digs, and five assisted blocks, while hitting .500. Sophomore middle blocker Erica Vandekopple added 10 kills, a .529 attack percentage, two solo and five assisted blocks for the Lakers. Junior Meghan Moore recorded eight kills, three digs, one solo and two assisted blocks, while redshirt freshman Danielle Alexander hit .625 with five kills and four digs.
Sophomore Cortney Lokker added a team-high 14 digs, while sophomore Alyson Riley added eight. Redshirt freshman Jamie Ashmore posted 23 assists and freshman Kelly Hogan recorded 19 assists.
The win marks the 11th in a row for the Lakers. Grand Valley has won 49 out of its last 55 games.
GVSU will finish the regular season with four matches on the road. Grand Valley will play Michigan Tech on Friday, Oct. 28, Northern Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 29, and Lake Superior State on Sunday, Oct. 30. The Lakers will close out the regular season at West Michigan rival Ferris State on Nov. 4.
