Freshman guard Jason Jamerson led three Lakers in double figures with 15 points as Grand Valley State captured a hard faught 62-59 GLIAC victory at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena before a crowd of 2,640. GVSU improves 10-3 overall and remains in first place in the GLIAC North Division with a 4-1 mark.
GVSU built a 29-24 halftime lead into a 49-39 lead when senior guard Marcus Wallace hit a jumper at the 9:31 mark of the second half. However, Ferris State pulled to within four (49-45) just minutes later and eventually trailed by just two points (51-49) with a 5:20 left in the game. Marcus Wallace put the Lakers up 53-49 on a jumper from the right wing and freshman center Callistus Eziukwu gave the Lakers a 55-49 lead on a jumper in the paint with 3:57 left. Ferris State would get no closer than three points the rest of the game and Marcus Wallace sealed the win with a pair of free throws with :06 seconds left.
Marcus Wallace turned in a fine all-around game with 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Freshman Callistus Eziukwu chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots, while Mike Hall scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds. Junior Jeff Grauzer pitched in eight point off the bench.
Ferris State was the 11th opponent that GVSU held under 67 points this season and the Bulldogs hit just 35.4 percent of its shots from the floor. GVSU hit 5-of-11 three-pointers and outrebounded FSU 45-34.
Grand Valley State will host Wayne State Thursday (Jan. 13) at 8 p.m. The game will be televised live on Comcast Cable in Detroit and Flint.
