Grand Valley State dropped a 76-63 decision at #17 Findlay Thursday night in a matchup between first-place teams in GLIAC North and South Divisions. GVSU falls to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in GLIAC action, while the Oilers improve to 11-2 and 5-0.
Findlay built a 33-18 lead with just five minutes left in the first half, but freshman Jason Jamerson hit a pair of three-pointers and Courtney James led the Laker defensive charge by holding UF to just three points the rest of the half. GVSU outscored Findlay 15-3 and trailed by just three (36-33) at intermission. Findlay was able to maintain its lead and eventually built a double-digit lead in the final 20 minutes. GVSU made a couple of runs and got the Oiler lead into single-digits, but Findlay hit their free throws down the stretch.
Freshman Jason Jamerson and junior Courtney James led GVSU with 13 points apiece. Marcus Wallace added 11 points and six assists, while Callistus Eziukwu tallied his sixth double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 caroms. Callistus also notched five blocked shots to give him 58 this season, the second-best, single-season total in GVSU anals. GVSU shot 48.0 percent from the floor, but turned the ball over 16 times compared to Findlay's eight miscues. The Lakers held a 35-30 rebounding advantage.
Grand Valley State will host West Michigan rival Ferris State Saturday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
