Grand Valley State defeated Wayne State 82-41 in a GLIAC contest Thursday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in GLIAC action, while Wayne State drops to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in conference play. GVSU will host Hillsdale College in another GLIAC matchup on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 6:00 p.m.
GVSU took a 43-25 halftime lead as they forced the Warriors to turn the ball over 17 times in the first 20 minutes. The Lakers shot 53.8% in the second half, while holding Wayne State to just 19.4% from the field in the final 20 minutes.
Grand Valley State recorded 35 points off of 27 Warrior turnovers and GVSU's bench scored 30 of its 82 points. The Lakers also recorded 12 points off of fastbreaks and 38 points in the paint. Twelve out of 13 Lakers scored in the game.
Sophomore guard Erika Ryskamp recorded a game-high 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals to lead the Lakers. Freshman center Rachael Willett posted a season-high 10 points, while freshman guard Crystal Zick also added 10 points, four rebounds, and a team-high six assists. Junior forward Niki Reams tallied a team-high 12 rebounds, nine points, three assists, and two steals. Senior guard Janine Guastella added nine points and sophomore guard Taushauna Churchwell recorded eight points and three assists.
