Grand Valley State defeated Lewis University, 7-0, in a rematch to advance to the 2004 Great Lakes Regional Championship title game against Northern Kentucky. The two teams will face off at 12:30 p.m. The Lakers improve to 36-7 overall.
GVSU scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the early lead. Senior 3B Lindsay Crawford reached on an error and advanced to second as senior LF Erin Ballinger reached on a bunt. The runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball and the first run scored as sophomore CF Tara Marsh singled through the right side. Senior 2B Jennifer Goldschmeding drew a two-out intentional walk and freshman DH made the Flyers pay as she singled to the shortstop to score the other Laker run of the inning.
GVSU added another run in the fourth inning as junior SS Sarah Paape led off the inning with a single to second base. Goldschmeding advanced the runner and Buresh singled to center field, putting runners at second and third. Senior pitcher Jennifer Mackson reached first safely loading the bases. Senior 1B Sara Vroegindewey singled through the left
side to score the run.
The Lakers broke the game open by scoring three more runs in the fifth inning. Marsh singled to shortstop to lead off the inning and scored as sophomore RF Shelby Brayton doubled to center field. Brayton advanced to third on a wild pitch. Paape walked, followed by Goldschmeding who singled through the left side to score Brayton. Mackson singled through the left side to load the bases. Paape scored as Vroegindewey reached on a fielder's choice.
Grand Valley tallied one run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the 7-0 victory. Marsh recorded a one-out single to the shortstop, followed by a single by Brayton. Paape singled up the middle to score the final Laker run.
Mackson pitched all seven innings for GVSU, picking up her 25th win of the season. She allowed seven hits and no runs, while striking out three.
Marsh was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Brayton, Paape, Goldschmeding, Buresh, and Vroegindewey all each had two hits for the Lakers.
