Wisconsin-Parkside Claims 16-7 Win Over GVSU In NCAA North Central Play

Ashland, Ohio - #9 Grand Valley State dropped a 16-7 decision to #22 Wisconsin-Parkside in NCAA DII North Central Regional action Thursday afternoon in Ashland, Ohio. GVSU will play the loser of the Ashland-Northern Kentucky game Friday morning at 10 a.m. GVSU falls to 39-15, while Parkside improves to 41-16.

Wisconsin-Parkside opened the game with four runs in the top of the first on four hits, however, GVSU put up a four-spot in the bottom of the first to tie the game, 4-4, after one complete inning. The Lakers took a brief 5-4 lead after a single run in the third, but UWP scored two in the top of the fourth and four in the top of the fifth to take a 10-5 lead. GVSU starter Jon Micoff (10-3) lasted just 3.1 innings, yielding six runs on six hits. Grand Valley state scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh, but Joe Finnerty gave up six runs in the top of the ninth, only one of which was earned. The big blow was a grand slam by CF Jim Healy. GVSU scored its seventh run in the bottom of the ninth after 3B Scott Allen doubled and scored on a flyout by CF Brandon McFarland.

3B Scott Allen was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. 1B Tim Hudnall collected two hits in his first action in two weeks after a hamstring injury. Hudnall tripled and singled in his only two at bats. SS Ryan Lyster collected two hits and scored a run. CF Brandon McFarland and DH Matt Wright each drove in a pair of run.

Micoff took the loss in his shortest outing of the year and was one of five GVSU pitchers.
