Grand Valley State swept Wayne State in a GLIAC doubleheader, 8-2, 1-0 (8 innings), on Friday. The Lakers improve to 24-4 overall and 6-0 in GLIAC action, while Wayne State falls to 21-19 overall and 1-3 in the GLIAC. GVSU will host Hillsdale in another GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Lakers came out strong on the offensive side in game one, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Freshman DH Katelyn Curtiss started things off for the Lakers with a walk and advanced to second on a single by sophomore CF Tara Marsh. The bases became loaded as junior SS Sarah Paape was hit by a pitch. Senior 1B Sara Vroegindewey walked to score the first Laker run. Senior 2B Jen Goldschmeding hit a triple to right field, knocking in three more runs for GVSU. Senior 3B Lindsay Crawford tallied a one-out single to right field to score Goldschmeding. Sophomore RF Shelby Brayton walked and the runners advanced on a passed ball. Senior LF Erin Ballinger doubled down the right field line, scoring the final two Laker runs of the inning.
Wayne State came back and added two runs in the fifth inning, but GVSU held on and also added another run in the sixth.
Senior Jennifer Mackson (15-2) pitched all seven innings for the Lakers, allowing eight hits and two runs, while striking out eight.
Goldschmeding went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Vroegindewey and Ballinger each added two more RBI each.
Game two was a pitchers dual as neither team scored until GVSU tallied a run in the top of the eight inning. Crawford started off the inning with a single to right field and moved to second on a sacrafice hit by Brayton. Sophomore catcher Megan Smith singled to left field and Crawford scored by an error by the left fielder.
Sophomore Kristin Jenner (7-1) pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and recording two strikeouts. Mackson recorded her fourth save of the season, pitching the final inning for GVSU.
