GVSU Claims 8-3 Win Over Calvin College

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Grand Valley State regrouped after Calvin College grabbed an early lead to claim an 8-3 decision Tuesday afternoon in Grand Rapids. GVSU improves to 19-12, while Calvin falls to 4-13. GVSU will host Hillsdale College Wednesday in a GLIAC doubleheader at the GVSU Baseball Field beginning at 2 p.m.

Calvin scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first and maintained that lead until the Lakers plated a single run in the top of the fourth. 3B Dan Fletcher walked and later scored on a sacrafice fly by C Matt Wright. GVSU took its first lead of the game in the sixth with four runs on five hits. Scott Allend doubled in a runs and CF Brandon McFarland singled in a pair of runs. 2B Scott Smith singled in the fourth run of the inning. After Calvin scored a single run in the seventh, the Lakers put a three spot up un the top of the eighth. LF Brad Gorski singled and scored on a Ryan Lyster double. Smith singled in Lyster and later scored on a 3B Jeremy Lundberg's single.

Smith was 3-5 with two RBI and one run scored, while LF Brad Gorski was 3-4 with a run scored. RF Joe Mertes went 2-5 with a run scored. The Lakers collected 14 hits. Marty Jackimowicz picked up his first win of the year, yielding three hits and three runs in 6.1 innings of work. Matt Middleton worked 2.2 innings of no hit ball.
