Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader with Saginaw Valley State Saturday, winning game one 11-1, but dropping the nightcap 3-2. GVSU (16-12, 7-5) will square off with the Cardinals Sunday at 12 noon.
GVSU scored a pair of runs in each of the first two inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Lakers added three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to build a 10-0 lead. SVSU scored its lone run in the top of the seventh. 3B Scott Allen led GVSU, going 2-4 with four RBI. Allend tripled and doubled in the contest. CF Brandon McFarland and C Elijah Beckwith each added two hits, while RF Joe Mertes was 1-3 with two RBI. Jon Micoff picked up his fifth win of the season (5-1), yielding just three hits in six innings of work. Micoff struck out three and walked just one.
SVSU built a 2-0 lead on the Lakers in game two with single runs in the third and fifth innings. However, GVSU scored two in the bottom of the fifth on three hits to tie the score. Saginaw Valley State scored the game winner in the top of the seventh with a hit and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. GVSU managed just two runs on five hits. SS Ryan Lyster was 2-3 with an RBI. Jason LaBaumbard took the loss for the Lakers, going six innings and yielding three runs, one earned on four hits. ,p>
