Grand Valley State split another GLIAC doubleheader against Wayne State on Sunday. The Lakers fell, 10-1 in game one, but came back to win game two, 10-7. GVSU is now 32-14 overall and 19-7 in the GLIAC. The Lakers will host St. Joseph's on Tuesday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m.
GVSU allowed 11 hits and 10 runs as they fell, 10-1 in game one of the doubleheader. Phil Mixter pitched 5.1 innings of play, allowing six hits and six runs, while striking out five batters. Sean McLeod threw the final two outs of the inning, giving up five hits and four runs.
Nick Sandy scored the lone Laker run, hitting a solo home run down the left field line to lead off the fifth inning. The Warriors posted three runs in the bottom of the second inning, one in the fifth and six runs in the sixth inning.
Tim Hudnall went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Sandy, Scott Smith, and Joe Mertes each tallied one hit for GVSU.
GVSU posted 10 runs off of nine hits in game two, giving the Lakers a 10-7 win. Scott Smith went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Brandon McFarland was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Elijah Beckwith went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double.
The Lakers got on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the first, but Wayne State came back to take a 4-1 lead by scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. GVSU exploded in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs off of five hits and two Warrior errors. Both teams added three more runs each, but the Lakers held on to win 10-7.
Jason LaBaumbard picked up th win, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs. Joe Finnerty threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, while striking out three.
