Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader at Wayne State Saturday, winning game one, 7-0, but falling game two, 4-3. The Lakers are now 31-13 overall and 18-6 in GLIAC play. The two teams will face off again Sunday in another GLIAC doubleheader.
Senior Matt Rafeld pitched all seven innings for the Lakers in game one, recording his seventh win of the season. Rafeld allowed just two hits, while tallying six strikeouts.
GVSU tallied three runs in the top of the fourth inning, added one run in both the fifth and sixth innings, and finished the game by adding two more runs in the seventh. Grand Valley was led by Brandon McFarland who went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, while Scott Smith, Scott Allen, and Elijah Beckwith all added two hits apiece.
The Lakerrs outhit the Warriors, 11-2 in game one.
Wayne State struck first in game two, putting up a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. GVSU took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, but the Warriors scored three more runs to seal the 4-3 win.
Jon Micoff started the game for the Lakers, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, two earned. Sean McLeod pitched one inning and Joe Finnerty faced the final batter of the game, striking him out.
Grand Valley tallied six hits in the game with no Laker collecting more than one hit. Joe Mertes and Jeremy Lundberg each had doubles for GVSU.
