The Lakers swept Gannon University, 1-0 and 2-0, in a GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday. The Lakers improve to 29-5 overall and 11-1 in GLIAC action. Grand Valley will host Mercyhurst College in another GLIAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 18 with game one beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Game one was a pitchers' dual as the Lakers pulled off the 1-0 victory. Just eight hits were allowed between the two pitchers. Senior two-time All-American Jennifer Mackson picked up her 18th win of the season, pitching all seven innings for GVSU. Mackson allowed six hits, while recording six strikeouts.
The Lakers scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior SS Sarah Paape tallied a one-out walk and advanced to third base as senior 1B Sara Vroegindewey reached first base on an error. Senior 2B Jennifer Goldschmeding recorded the RBI as she grounded out to the shortstop to score the run.
Paape recorded both of the Laker hits, going 2-for-2 with two triples and a walk.
GVSU took advantage of two Golden Knight errors, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning to seal the 2-0 win in game two. Sophomore RF Miranda Titler led off the inning by reaching first base on a throwing error by the third baseman. Senior LF Erin Ballinger advanced Titler and reached first base on a bunt single. The runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore CF Tara Marsh. Paape reached first base the other Gannon error, knocking in the two Laker runs.
Sophomore Kristin Jenner pitched four innings, allowing three hits, while striking out two. Mackson picked up her fifth save of the season, pitching the final three innings for GVSU. Mackson allowed just one hit, while recording two strikeouts.
Ballinger went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Paape tallied both Laker RBI.
