Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader from Mercyhurst Saturday, winning game one by a 5-1 margin and then notched a 10-9 comeback win in game two. GVSU moves to 25-12 overall and 15-5 in GLIAC action.
GVSU pulled off an incredible comeback win in the second game Saturday. Grand Valley State scored six runs off six hits in its final at bat to claim a 10-9 win. SS Ryan Lyster provided to final margin with a two-out, two-run double to right center that scored 3B Jeremy Lundberg and C Elijah Beckwith. 2B Scott Smith opened the inning by reaching on an error by SS Chris Riordan. LF Scott Allen single and RF Joe Mertes singled to score Smith and advance Allen to third. 1B Tim Hudnall reached on a fielders choice to score Allen and pull GVSU to within a 9-6 margin. CF Brandon McFarland and Beckwith recorded back-to-back singles to load the bases for DH Matt Wright. Wright slapped a two-strike single to centerfield to score Hudnall and McFarland. 3B Jeremy Lundberg reached on a fielders choice and Beckwith advanced to third to set up the game-winning double by Lyster. GVSU opened the scoring in the first inning when Allen doubled and scored on Hudnall sac fly. Mercyhurst scored six in the top of the third and a single run in the top of the fifth to take a 7-1 lead. GVSU scored three in the bottom of the fifth when Allen double and Mertes walked before a three-run HR by Hudnall to strait away center. Mercyhurst pushed its lead to 9-4 with a pair of runs on a two-run HR in the top of the seventh. Hudnall was 1-3 with five RBI, while Wright and Lyster each drove in a pair. Allen was 3-4 with three runs scored. Matt Middleton picked up the win in relief of Jason LaBaumbard with 2.1 innings of work.
In game one, Tim Stacey put Mercyhurst up 1-0 with a HR to right field in the top of the second. The Lakers came back with a single run in the bottom of the second on three hits. DH Dan Fletcher scored McFarland who doubled to open the inning. McFarland then gave GVSU a 2-1 lead with a solo HR to left. Hudnall put GVSU up 4-1 with a two-run HR to center that scored Mertes who singled. The Lakers added a single run in the sixth when Lundberg double and then scored on a Scott Smith triple to right. Hudnall was 1-2 with two RBI on a HR. McFarland was 2-2 with two runs scored and one RBI, wile Lundberg was 2-2 with a run scored. Jon Micoff picked up his team-leading seventh win of the year (7-1) in five innings of work. Micoff yielded one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Sean McLeod pitched a hitless sixth and Joe Finnerty finished the game with a hitless seventh.
Grand Valley State will host Northwood Wednesday at 2 p.m. in a key GLIAC doubleheader at the GVSU Baseball Field.
