GVSU Claims 12-9 Victory Over Missouri-St. Louis Friday

St. Louis, Mo. - Grand Valley State claimed a 12-9 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Friday afternoon in St. Louis. GVSU improves to 4-3 overall and an all important 3-0 versus the GLVC. The Lakers will play UMSL Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

GVSU scored a single run in the first and two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Lakers moved ahead 6-0 with three more in the fourth. However, UMSL scored one in the bottom of the fourth and five in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game (6-6). GVSU scored moved ahead for good with two in the top of the seventh and clinched the victory with four in the top of the ninth to take a 12-6 lead. Phil Mixter started for the Lakers and lasted into the sixth. Matt Middleton picked up the win after entering the game in the sixth. Joe Finnerty picked up the save going the final three innings. 2B Scott Smith led the Laker offensive attack with a double, triple and four RBIs. RF Joe Mertes and Nick Sandy each drove in a pair of runs, while 1B Tim Hudnall and Brandon McFarland each tallied a pair of hits.
