Grand Valley State dominated a GLIAC doubleheader at Hillsdale College Wednesday, winning by scores of 7-1 and 10-1. GVSU improves to 15-11 overall and 6-4 in GLIAC action. GVSU will host Saginaw Valley State in a key GLIAC series Saturday and Sunday at the GVSU Baseball Field.
In game one, GVSU jumped out to a 3-1 after one inning of play as Matt Rafeld picked up the pitching win. Rafeld scattered four hits, struck out six and walked none in his complete game victory. C Elijah Beckwith went 2-3 with three RBI, while 1B Tim Hudnall went 1-3 with two RBI. In game two, Phil Mixter yielded four hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Joe Finnerty struck out two in the seventh. The Lakers scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, but broke the game open with four in fifth and three in the seventh. 3B Scott Allen went 2-3 with three runs scored and four RBI, while RF Joe Mertes went 4-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Grand Valley State pounded out 24 hits in the two games, including five doubles and one HR. The Laker pitching staff recorded 15 strikeouts and issued just one walk in 14 innings of baseball.
