Grand Valley State defeated Wisonsin-Parkside, 2-1, in its final game of the GLIAC vs. GLVC Tournament in Peoria, Ill. on Sunday. The Lakers trailed 1-0 until senior 1B Sara Vroegindewey hit a two-out double to score the game winning runs for GVSU in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Freshman DH Katelyn Curtiss started off the sixth inning diving into first base to beat out the throw for a single. Curtiss advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore CF Tara Marsh. Junior SS Sarah Paape got on first after being hit by a pitch. The Lakers got two outs before Vroegindewey hit a shot to left field to score the two runs.
Senior two-time All-American Jennifer Mackson (10-2) picked up the win as she pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and one earned run, while striking out six. With the win, Mackson broke GVSU's all-time career wins record with 88. The record was previously held by Emily Edlund who tallied 87 wins from 1997-2000.
The Lakers are now 16-4 overall and will host Cornerstone University on Tuesday, March 30 at 3:00 p.m. in a make-up game.
