Grand Valley State scored first as they defeated the University of Southern Indiana 2-0 Friday at the GLIAC vs. GLVC Tournament in Peoria, Ill. The Lakers improve to 14-2 overall on the year and will face Northern Kentucky on Saturday, March 27 at 8:00 CST.
GVSU scored two runs in the third inning to take the early lead. Sophomore catcher Megan Smith walked to start off the inning and advanced to second on a single up the middle by senior leftfielder Erin Ballinger. The bases became loaded as Tara Marsh reached on an Eagle error. The two runs scored on a one-out single by junior shortstop Sarah Paape.
Senior two-time All-American Jennifer Mackson (8-1) pitched all seven innings for the Lakers, recording a four-hitter and 12 strikeouts.
The Lakers tallied four hits, all singles. Paape went 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Ballinger, senior 2B Jen Goldschmeding, and senior 3B Lindsay Crawford all recorded the other GVSU hits.
