GVSU Claims 74-37 Win At Saginaw Valley

University Center, Mich. - Freshman guard Crystal Zick scored the first eight points of the game and Grand Valley State jumped out to a 14-0 lead five minutes into the contest en route to a 74-37 GLIAC road win Thursday night in University Center, Mich. GVSU improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in league action, while the Cardinals fall to 3-5 and 1-2.

In addition to Zick's first-half scoring, senior guard Janine Guastella scored 17 of her 21 points in the opening stanza as the GVSU built a 40-17 halftime lead. SVSU's first field goal came on a three-pointer at the 14:06 mark of the opening half by Sara Bilunes.

Grand Valley State shot 54.5 percent from the floor (30-55) and hit 8-of-19 three-pointers. SVSU managed just 24.1 percent shooting for the game. GVSU outscored the Cardinals 32-0 in the paint and tallied a 28-5 advantage in points off turnovers.

Junior center Jaida Bourke chipped in eight points, all in the second half, while sophomore guard Taushauna Churchwell scored eight first-half points. Junior guard Niki Reams dished out five assists and notched three steals.

Grand Valley State will return to the hardwood Saturday (Dec. 11) at 14th-ranked and defending GLIAC Champion Lake Superior State. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
