Grand Valley State women's basketball defeated Ashland University, 84-62, in its GLIAC opener. The Lakers improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in GLIAC action.
The Lakers took a 43-34 lead after 20 minutes as they shot 46.9% from the field in the first half. GVSU outscored the Eagles, 41-28 in the second half. The Lakers outrebounded the Eagles, 45-36 and forced Ashland to commit 20 turnovers.
Junior forward Niki Reams tallied 22 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals. Eight of her boards came on the offensive glass. Sophomore guard Erika Ryskamp also posted 22 points, four assists, and four rebounds, while freshman guard Crystal Zick recorded 10 points and four steals. Sophomore forward Julia Braseth added six points, while pulling down nine boards. Sophomore Taushauna Churchwell recorded eight points, four assists, and three rebounds.
GVSU will travel to Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, Dec. 9 at
5:30 p.m. for another GLIAC contest. GVSU will not return home until
January 3 for a non-conference matchup against Lewis University at 7:00 p.m.
