Grand Valley State tallied a 56-41 win in its season opener against Calvin College Tuesday night. The Lakers will host the Days Inn Grand Haven Classic this weekend. GVSU will play St. Cloud State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and North Dakota on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

GVSU took a 31-21 lead at the half and outscored Calvin, 25-20 in the second half. The Lakers were led by senior guard Janine Guastella who tallied 15 points. Freshman guard Crystal Zick recorded 10 points and seven steals, while sophomore guard Erika Ryskamp added 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Sophomore Julia Braseth tallied seven points and six rebounds. Junior transfer Niki Reams (University of Michigan) potsed six points, a team-high 11 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in her debut as a Laker.

Grand Valley State outrebounded Calvin, 41-28, tallying 15 on the offensive glass. The Lakers shot 43.4% from the field, while Calvin College shot just 29.3% on the game.
