Lakers Advance In GLIAC Tournament With 9-7 Win Over Hillsdale

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State (35-11-1) came back from a 6-1 deficit in the second inning to claim a 9-7 win over Hillsdale College Thursday in first-round action at the GLIAC Tournament. GVSU will face Saginaw Valley State Friday at 4 p.m. in a winners bracket game.

Hillsdale scored four in the first and two more in the second before GVSU was able to get on the board with a single run in the second. GVSU scored two in the bottom of the fourth on one hit and two Charger errors. Hillsdale added a run in the top of the firfth, but the Lakers came back and scored two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. SS Tony Pfennig struck out swinging, but reached base on a wild pitch. 1B Joe Brunink singled and advanced to second on the throw to third base in attempt to get Pfennig. LF Kevin Boyd reached on a fielders choice that scored Pfennig and then 3B Scott Allen singled to score Brunink. GVSU scored three runs on two hits and three Hillsdale errors in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. Brunink doubled in one run and the Lakers added two unearned runs. GVSU a added an insurance run in the eighth as Pfennig walked, advanced to third on a single by Brunink and then scored on a sac fly by Boyd.

Ben Slein was the story for the Lakers as he picked up his sixth win of the year with no losses. Ben came in for starter Matt Rafeld in the third inning and limited Hillsdale to just two hits and one run over seven innings. Slein struck out three and walked just one. Brunink was 3-5 with two runs and one RBI, while C Elijah Beckwith was 2-4 with two runs scored. Boyd drove in two runs and Pfennig scored a pair.
