Grand Valley State shortstop Tony Pfennig stole home with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh and two outs to help the Lakers claim a 6-5 comeback win. GVSU won game one by a 5-3 margin. The Lakers improve to 32-11-1 overall and 18-6-1 in GLIAC play.
RF Joe Mertes hit what many thought would be the game-winning HR in the bottom of the sixth to give GVSU a 4-3 lead. However, Wayne State opened the top of the seventh with three straight hits and eventually took a 5-4 lead. CF Mike McCallister led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single and then Pfennig doubled to leftcenter. 1b Joe Brunink was intentionally walked before LF Kevin Boyd tied the game with a sac fly. 3B Scott Allen was called out on strikes for the second out of the inning which brought catcher Matt Wright up to the plate. Pfennig took off on a 1-1 count and easily made it safely. Boyd was 2-2 with one RBI, while McCallister was 1-2 with two runs scored. Joe Finnerty picked up the win in relief. Finnerty came in with two runners on and no one out in the top of the seventh.
In game one, Matt Rafeld improved to 7-1 on the year with a 5-3 win. Rafeld went six innings, yielding three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Joe Finnerty picked up his fourth save of the year with a scoreless seventh. GVSU scored a single run in the bottom of the first. WSU tied the game in the top of the second and then took a 2-1 lead in the third. GVSU tied the game in the fourth when Boyd was hit by a pitch and Elijah Beckwith and Scott Allen hit back to back singles, the later scoring Boyd. GVSU broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on five hits. McCallister, Pfennig and Joe Brunink each singled and then came home on a two-run single by Elijah Beckwith. McCallister was 2-3 with two runs scored, while Beckwith was 2-3 with two RBI.
Grand Valley State will host Wayne State in a GLIAC doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
