GVSU Defeats Indianapolis, 4-2, In NCAA Baseball Action

Allendale, Mich. - Phil Mixter tossed 8.2 innings of ball, yielding seven hits and two unearned runs en route to his team-high 10th win of the year as Grand Valley State claimed a 4-2 win over Indianapolis in NCAA North Central Regional action Friday (May 16). Grand Valley State (38-12-1) will face Ashland in a winners bracket game Saturday at 1 p.m.

GVSU right fielder Joe Mertes got the Lakers going early with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to give GVSU a 1-0 lead. Indianapolis scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth, however, GVSU came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. 1B Joe Brunink scored on a single by Kevin Boyd and Boyd then scored on a single by 3B Scott Allen. The Lakers added another run in the bottom of the seventh when 2B Jeremy Lundberg walked was sacraficed to second by CF Mike McCallister. Lundberg then scored on a single by SS Tony Pfennig. Indianapolis added an unearned run in the top of the ninth before All-GLIAC relief pitcher Joe Finnerty picked up his seventh save of the year by getting the final out with two on base.

Grand Valley State scored four runs on nine hits, while Indianapolis tallied two runs on seven hits. Eight Lakers collected hits, including a 2-4 day with an RBI by Scott Allen. Joe Brunink was 1-2 with an RBI, while Kevin Boyd was 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Brunink became the GVSU single-season leader with his 73rd hit of the year, while Mixter's victory gave him a GVSU single-season best 10 wins. Blake Wyatt took the loss for Indianapolis. The Greyhounds will face Missouiri-St. Louis in a 10 a.m. elimination game.
