#5 GVSU Wins Two Over #15 Ashland

#5 Grand Valley State improved their winning streak to 25 as they picked up 3-2 and 4-0 victories over #15 Ashland University. The Lakers are now 26-1 overall and 4-0 in GLIAC play.

GVSU won game one, 3-2, in eight innings behind pitcher Jennifer Mackson. Mackson pitched all eight innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, and struck out 13. She improves to 14-0 on the season.

The Lakers trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the eighth. Jennifer Goldschmeding was placed on second base in the bottom half of the eighth and advanced on a sacrafice bunt by Sara Vroegindewey. Kerri Jonas walked to give GVSU two runners. Both runs, including the game-winner, scored on errors by the shortstop and the right fielder.

In game two, Grand Valley won, 4-0, by a stellar performance by freshman pitcher Kristin Jenner. Jenner picked up her eighth win of the year, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing only one hit, while striking out five. Mackson pitched the final 1.2 innings, earning her fifth save of the season.

Vroegindewey led the Lakers, going 2-for-3, with two triples. Grand Valley scored one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh to earn the win.

GVSU will host Northwood University in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 9, with game one set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
