Lakers Sweep Hillsdale In GLIAC Doubleheader

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State rolled to their 10th straight win with 6-1 and 11-1 victories over Hillsdale on Wednesday in Allendale. Phil Mixter and Matt Rafeld picked up the wins on the mound and Joe Mertes led the offense with two home runs and four RBI. GVSU improves to 19-5 overall and 9-1 in GLIAC action, while Hillsdale falls to 13-7 (6-3 GLIAC).

GVSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game behind a four run third inning, after recording four singles and and three walks. They added their final run in the four and cruised to the victory. Mixter (4-2) threw 5.1 innings allowing five hits and striking out seven. Joe Finnerty pitched the final 1.2 to close out the game. Mike McCallister tallied three hits and Matt Wright pitched in with two RBI.

Rafeld allowed a Hillsdale run in the bottom of the first in game two but GVSU scored 11 straight, with runs in each of their last six innings. Mertes provided the big blows with a solo shot and a two run home run, his fifth and sixth of the season. Scott Allen was 3-for-4 with four RBI in the game and the Chargers also contributed to the Laker cause with six errors that lead to four unearned runs. Rafeld (5-0) struck out six in six innings of work and David Olson came in to pitch the seventh.

The Lakers will host Ashland for GLIAC twinbills on Saturday and Sunday.
