#6 Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader at Hillsdale Saturday. GVSU dropped game one, 5-4, but regrouped and claimed a 5-2 decision in game two to earn the split. GVSU is now 38-4 overall and 13-1 in GLIAC action.
Freshman pitcher Kristen Jenner picked up GVSU after All-American Jennifer Mackson was tagged with the loss in game one. Jenner yielded two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work to improve her record to 13-1. Grand Valley broke the game open with four runs on four hits in the bottom of second. 1B Sara Vroegindewey doubled and then scored on sacrafice fly by C Bobbi Conner. Freshman CF Tara Marsh singled in Rachel Blain and Danielle Ireton who had walked earlier in the innigs. Lindsey Crawford then doubled in Erin Ballinger who reached on an infield single. GVSU added a single run in the third when Blain singled home Vroegindewey who opened the frame with a single. Hillsdale scored two runs in the top of the sixth on three hits.
The Lakers let game one slip away as Hillsdale scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh on three hits and two Laker errors. The first two hitters reached on an error and and a single for the Chargers. Mackson then retired the next two hitters on fly outs. The Lakers appeared to end the game with a strikout, but the third strike was a wild pitch that loaded the bases. A single to center scored two to tied the game. The game winner came on a single to center that scored one.
GVSU opened the first game with three runs in the top of the first on two hits and a Charger error. Crawford reached after being hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch. Blain singled in Jen Goldschmeding who reached on an error and Kerri Jonas who singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. HC pulled to within one when Mackson yielded her first homerun of the year, a two-run shot to left field. GVSU scored a single run in the top of the sixth when a Bobbi Conner double scored Jonas who had reached on an error by the shortstop.
