Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader at Mercyhurst Saturday (April 19). GVSU claimed the first game by a 9-2 score, but dropped the nightcap 8-5. GVSU, 15-6-1 in league play and 26-10-1 overall, reamained in first place in the GLIAC baseball standings.
Junior Jason LaBaumbard (4-2) earned the victory in game one, yielding just two runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. The Lakers opened with a two-out rally that scored two runs in the opening frame. Elijah Beckwith doubled in 1B Joe Brunink and LF Kevin Boyd who drew walks and advanced a base on a wild pitch. GVSU continued the scoring punch in the second inning with the aid of a walk, hit by pitch and an error. SS Tony Pfennig delivered the only hit of the inning, a two RBI single. RF Joe Mertes scored when CF Mike McCallister reached on an error. Mercyhurst scored a single run in the fourth, but GVSU added two runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh. Beckwith was 2-4 with three RBI, while Boyd was 2-3 with two RBI.
In game two, GVSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. Grand Valley scored three runs on four hits and two Mercyhurst errors. Mercyhurst scored a single run in the bottom of the third and then tied the game with two in the bottom of the fourth. However, GVSU came back with two runs on one hit and a mercyhurst error. Brunink walked and then scored when Boyd reached on an error by the catcher. Beckwith then singled in Boyd with the second run. GVSU yielded four runs on three hits and a GVSU error in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. MC added a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Matt Rafeld started the game, but was not involved in the decision. Rafeld yielded three runs on four hits in four innings of work. David Olson was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs, two earned, on four hits. Elijah Beckwith was 2-3 with an RBI.
