April 18, 2003

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State was defeated in the first two rounds of tennis action at the GLIAC Championships in Midland on Friday. GVSU lost their first match 5-2 against #9 Northwood and their second round matchup 5-3 to Michigan Tech. GVSU is now 4-16 on the year.

GVSU started the day very well taking the first two doubles matches over the Timberwolves. Northwood was the top seed in the GLIAC and is ranked #9 in the nation. Desmond Early and Matt Young pulled an 8-6 upset in #1 doubles, before Kyle Dehne and Pete Schwallier earned an 8-5 win in the second doubles matchup. However, GVSU could not get anything going in singles action falling in straight sets in the first four matches.

Desmond Early won a 6-3, 6-4 decision in the matchup against MTU, who earned the #4 seed in the GLIAC tournament. The other two GVSU points were earned on contests that did not finish, due to the Huskies taking the match.

The Lakers will play on Saturday against Findlay in their final match of the championships.
