#6 Lakers Sweep #15 Wayne State

Allendale, Mich. - #6 Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader at #16 Wayne State to take first place in the GLIAC. The Lakers took game one 1-0 behind Jennifer Mackson's 12th shutout of the year, and earned an 11-3 mercy rule victory after five innings in game two. WSU entered the game ranked first in the latest NCAA Great Lakes Regional poll, while GVSU was in second and both teams were undefeated in conference action. The Lakers improve to 37-3 on the year, and a perfect 12-0 in the GLIAC. WSU falls to 27-8-1, and 8-2.

Mackson improved to 21-1 on the year as she allowed only three hits in game one. GVSU scored the lone run of the game in the second. Kerri Jonas led of the inning with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rachel Blain. Erin Ballinger then came up with the key hit to score the winning run. Mackson took care of the rest to get the Lakers the win.

Jennifer Goldschmeding led the Lakers with two hits, with GVSU pounding out six in the game.

The Laker bats heated up in game two as GVSU scored three runs in the first inning on three hits and two WSU errors. The Warriors answered right back with three of their own in the second, but the momentum would soon swing back to GVSU. GVSU posted five hits in a four-run second inning including a two-run single by Bobbi Conner. The Lakers were again aided by WSU mistakes in the third as two errors led to three GVSU runs. Grand Valley finished the game in the fifth when they pushed across the last run on a single by Conner. The game ended by the eight-run mercy rule with the bases loaded and nobody out in the inning.

Kristen Jenner earned the win on the mound to go to 12-1 on the year. Jenner allowed eight hits, with all three runs being earned. Blain was 3-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBI, while Tara Marsh, Lindsay Crawford, Sara Vroegindewey, and Conner all tallied two hits apiece.

GVSU will finish their week of action with a doubleheader at Hillsdale on Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm.
