Grand Valley State rebounded from a tough 3-2 loss in game one of a GLIAC doubleheader at Northwood to claim an 8-2 victory in game two and earn the split. GVSU is now 23-9-1 overall and 12-5-1 in GLIAC play.
GVSU scored an unearned run in the first and then three in the second on four hits en route to the 8-2 GLIAC victory Wednesday. The Lakers scored two more in the fifth and two in the seventh to conclude the scoring. Sophomore Ben Slein earned his fifth victory of the season, yielding just four hits and two unearned runs in the seventh with two outs. Slein struckout four and walked six. Eight Lakers notched a hit, including a 3-4 day by LF Kevin Boyd. Tony Pfennig was 2-2 with three runs scored, while 3B Scott Allen and C Matt Wright each collected a pair of hits. GVSU scored eight runs on 13 hits with one error, while Northwood scored two runs on four hits with three errors.
In game one, Northwood scored one in the third and one in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. GVSU scored an unearned run in the fifth, then added a run in the fifth when 1B Joe Brunink single home Mike McCallister who single and stole second. Neither team scored until the bottom of the 10th when Northwood pushed across the game-winner on a wild pitch with two outs. David Olson took the loss for the Lakers. GVSU scored two runs on five hits with two errors, while Northwood scored three runs on 10 hits with three errors.
Grand Valley State will be at Mercyhurst Friday (April 19) and Saturday (April 20) for a GLIAC four-game series.
