Grand Valley State (22-8-1) and Saginaw Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader Sunday. SVSU won game one, 6-0, but the Lakers rebounded to win game two 2-1 in eight innings. GVSU (11-4-1) moved into first place in the GLIAC baseball standings with the split.
SVSU scored in the bottom of the first and the Lakers were scoreless until the sixth inning of game two. Laker catcher Elijah Beckwith reached on an error and advanced to second with two outs. 3B Scott Allen then doubled to drive in Beckwith and tie the game at 1-1. GVSU scored the game-winner in the top of the eigth when Tony Pfennig single and stole second. Two Lakers were retired before Beckwith doubled deep to center to score Pfennig. Nick Bultema pitched 2.1 innings of no-hit ball before giving way to eventual winner David Olson. Olson yielded just two hits in three innings of work and Joe Finnerty picked up the save with a scoreless eighth.
Grand Valley State picked up just four hits in game one Sunday as SVSU claimed a 6-0 win. Joe Brunink tallied two of the hits. Jason LaBaumbard was tagged with the loss, yielding six runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
Grand Valley State will be at Northwood Wednesday (April 16) for a GLIAC doubleheader.
