April 12, 2003

Box Score

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State split their first doubleheader of the weekend series in University Center, Mich. on Saturday. The Lakers took game one 6-2 behind the bat of Joe Brunink, and a solid performance on the mound by Phil Mixter. GVSU couldn't take advantage of another great pitching effort by Matt Rafeld as they fell 1-0 in game two. The Lakers are now 21-7-1 on the year and 10-3-1 in the GLIAC, while SVSU is 16-7 (6-2 GLIAC).

GVSU was down 1-0 after three innings but scored six runs in the next four to earn the win. The big inning was a three-run fifth as Tony Pfennig posted a two-run double and Brunink followed with an RBI single. Brunink posted three hits and scored twice, while Scott Allen tallied two hits. Mixter (5-2) threw 6.2 innings allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out six. Joe Finnerty struck out the final batter of the game with the bases loaded to earn his first save of the season.

The Lakers could not put a push a run across in game two, as they only posted two hits on the game. Rafeld, last week's GLIAC Pitcher of the Week, continued throwing well as he gave up only five hits and no earned runs in six innings of work.

The two squads will finish the series with a doubleheader at SVSU on Sunday at 1 pm.
