Grand Valley State won thier eighth straight game with a 7-3 victory over Calvin on Tuesday in Grand Rapids. The Lakers got five innings of scoreless relief to come back from a 3-1 deficit. Ryan Bridges (1-0) got the victory on the mound by not allowing a run in three innnigs of work. Junior Joe Brunink led the offense with two hits including his second home run of the season. GVSU improves to 17-5 on the year while Calvin falls to 5-9.
The Lakers opened up the game with a run in the first on a Tony Pfennig double and were threating for more but Calvin got out of the inning with a double play. The Knights then scored the next three runs of the ballgame to go up 3-1 after two.
GVSU answered right back by scoring in the top of the third with two runs as Mike McCallister generated a run scoring on a passed ball and Brunink followed with a solo shot. GVSU finished off the game with single runs in four of the the last five innings, including a solo blast from Matt Wright.
Following Bridges on the mound was Doug Fox and Matt Bussa who wrapped up the game for the Lakers. The three allowed only three hits in their five innings of action.
Grand Valley will host Hillsdale in a GLIAC twinbill on Wednesday at 1:00 pm.
