Grand Valley State extended their winning streak to 23 with two wins over Ferris State to open up the GLIAC season. The Lakers won game one 5-2 and earned a come from behind 5-3 win in the second game on Tuesday at Laker Field. The 23 consecutive victories sets a new school record for the Lakers breaking the old mark of 21 set back in 1999. Grand Valley State, who is ranked #5 in the latest NFCA Top 25, improves to 24-1 on the year.
Jennifer Mackson (13-0) earned the win in game one, allowing one earned run while striking out 10. Rachel Blain posted her first home run of the year and Lindsay Crawford pounded out a two-run double. Bobbi Conner was the lone batter with two hits in the game.
The Lakers came from behind in game two after falling behind 3-1 heading into the last three innings. GVSU's bats came alive in the fifth as Sara Vroegindewey's two out single scored Erin Ballinger and Crawford and Kerri Jonas gave the Lakers the lead with her sixth home run of the year. Kristin Jenner (7-0) threw the first 4.1 innings to earn the victory, and Mackson shut the door in the last 2.2 to get her fourth save of the season.
The Lakers travel to Pinconning, Mich. to play Lake Superior State on Thursday in non-conference action before coming home to host GLIAC doubleheadhers against Findlay and Ashland on Saturday and Sunday.
