Grand Valley State outscored Findlay 22-1 Sunday to complete a four-game sweep over the Oilers. GVSU claimed an 8-1 win in game one Sunday, followed by a 14-0 win in the series finale. GVSU improved to 16-5 overall and 7-1 in GLIAC action.
Junior Jason LaBaumbard improved to 2-1 on the year with a complete game win in the first game Sunday. LaBaumbard recorded three strikeouts and yielded just five hits with no walks. GVSU scored two in the bottom of the first and three more in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Lakers scored two more in the fifth and one in the sixth. Junior 1B Joe Brunink was 4-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while LF Kevin Boyd was 3-4 with three RBI. Sophomore 3B Scott Allen and senior CF Mike McCallister each collected two hits. GVSU pounded out 12 hits in the game.
In game two, GVSU batted around in the third inning and scored seven runs on seven hits in the frame. The Lakers scored five more in the fourth and two in the fifth to complete the scoring. 2B Matt Wright smacked a three-run home run and RF Joe Mertes had a bases loaded thriple to help the cause. McCallister, C Elijah Beckwith, Allen and DH Adam Tomczyk each collected two hits for the Lakers. Wright drove home four runs and Mertes three. Junior Ben Slein improved to 3-0 on the year, throwing five shutout innings with five strikeouts. David Olson and Joe Finnerty each tossed a scoreless inning of relief. GVSU notched 13 hits in the contest, while three GVSU pitchers allowed just two hits and struck out seven.
