Allendale, Mich. -
Grand Valley State used stellar pitching and timely hitting to sweep a GLIAC doubleheader Saturday from Findlay (3-0, 4-2) in chilly weather conditions. GVSU (14-5, 5-1) and Findlay (3-14, 0-6) will square off again Sunday at Grand Valley State beginning at 12 noon.
Junior pitcher Phil Mixter tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout in game one Saturday. Mixter struck out nine and walked just two as he picked up his third win of the year. The Lakers scored one run in the first, third and fourth innings. GVSU picked up six hits on the day, with Joe Mertes (2-2) being the only one with multiple hits. Kevin Boyd drove in one run with a sac fly. Drew Binkowski took the loss for Findlay, going six innings and yielding just six hits.
Findlay scored two unearned runs in the top of the first of game two, but that would be all that crossed the dish for the Oilers on the day. GVSU came back and tied the game in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. The Lakers added one run in the bottom of the second and an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Junior pitcher Matt Rafeld went the distance, yielding just five hits en route to his fourth win of the year (4-0). Elijah Beckwith led the hitting attack (2-3) in which eight Lakers contributed. Mike McCallister, Kevin Boyd and Beckwith each drove in a run. Chris Antonides took the loss for Findlay.
