Lakers Win Two Over Lewis

Grand Valley State picked up two victories against Lewis University in their home opener at Laker Field on Thursday. Jennifer Mackson pitched a four-hit shutout to lead the Lakers to a 2-0 win in game one. The Lakers came back from a 4-0 deficit in the fourth inning to win game two, 5-4.

Erin Ballinger had a one out single in the third inning of game one which started the Lakers on offense. Lindsay Crawford hit a two out single and the runners advanced on a passed ball. Jennifer Goldschmeding knocked in one run on a single.

The Lakers added another run in the fifth inning, as Ballinger reached on an error and Tara Marsh advanced her on a sacrifice bunt. Goldschmeding had another RBI as she hit a double, scoring Ballinger.

Mackson pitched all seven innings of game one, striking out eight. Goldschmeding was 2-for-3 with both RBI. Ballinger was 1-for-2 and scored both Laker runs.

The Lakers were down 4-0 in the fourth inning of game two, but the Lakers proceeded to score five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Goldschmeding started off the scoring rally by hitting a one out single. Sara Vroegindewey hit a triple, to knock in the run, followed by a Bobbi Conner double, which scored another run.

Kristin Jenner picked up the win, pitching five innings for GVSU, allowing six hits and four runs, while striking out three. Mackson recorded her third save of the season, pitching the final two innings, allowing two hits and struck out two.

The Lakers will host Ferris State in a doubleheader in their GLIAC opener at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.
